Hero, priestess of Aphrodite at Sestos, met Leander of Abydos at a festival and they fell in love. Leander used his skills if flirtation, as well as his problematic argument that Aphrodite, as the goddess of love and sex, would scorn the worship of a virgin, to convince Hero to bone. Each night Leander swam the Hellespont to visit her, guided by her lit torch like a moth to a flame. Their secret amphibious nocturnal love affair lasted through a warm summer, but when winter came they agreed to put that shit on pause so as to ease the freezing of Leander’s balls on his nightly swims. As fate would have it, one stormy winter night, Leander saw the torch at the top of Hero's tower. He tried to swim the Hellespont but the light of her torch was extinguished by the storm, Leander was lost in the waves and drowned. Hero, seeing her lover’s body, was overcome with sorrow and drowned herself.
